> dijitul takes over abandoned websites in the UK when the original developer has disappeared, retired or closed down. We don't need the developer's contact: if you control the domain or can prove you own it, we can move the site, get it working and host it on dijitul Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT.

## Key facts

- No developer contact needed to start
- Requirement: you control the domain, or can prove ownership with records, invoices or contracts
- We trace where the site and email are hosted from public DNS records
- Domain moved into your name so it can't be stranded again
- Email, DNS and website all handed to one UK company with your own Plesk login
- £1 a day + VAT, including free migration, daily backups and a domain renewal each year

## It happens more often than you'd think

A one-person web business built your site years ago. They hosted it, renewed the domain and fixed things when you rang. Then they retired, moved abroad, closed the company or simply stopped replying. Everything still works, until it doesn't: a renewal notice goes to an email address nobody reads, a PHP upgrade breaks the contact form, or the hosting account lapses.

None of this means the website isn't yours. It means the keys are in someone else's pocket. Our job is to get them back to you and stop it happening again.

## What we need from you

The single most important thing is the domain name, because whoever controls the domain controls where the website and email go. We can start if any of these is true:

- You can log in to the account where the domain is registered.
- The domain is registered in your name or your business's name, even if you've never logged in.
- You can show the site was made for you: invoices, a contract, or emails with the developer.

Helpful but not essential: old hosting logins, FTP details, website admin passwords, or the name of the hosting company on old bank statements.

## How the takeover works

- **Trace it.** From public DNS and WHOIS records we can see where the domain is registered, where the website is hosted and who handles your email. That map tells us who to talk to.
- **Secure the domain.** We help you get the domain into your own name and an account you control. For .uk domains that means updating the registrant details with Nominet through the registrar.
- **Copy the site.** If you can access the hosting, we copy everything. If the hosting is in the developer's account, the host can sometimes release data to the proven owner. If not, we copy what's publicly visible and rebuild the rest.
- **Move email first if needed.** Developers often ran their clients' email too. We check your MX records and move mailboxes into the 10 POP3/IMAP email accounts included with your plan, so you don't lose messages. Moving up to 5 email accounts is part of the free migration; more than that may be charged. See [email hosting](https://dijituldns.co.uk/email-hosting/).
- **Go live with us.** The site moves to our Plesk servers, DNS goes to [Cloudflare](https://dijituldns.co.uk/cloudflare-dns-management/), and daily backups start.

## Old code, no documentation

Abandoned sites are usually old sites, and there's rarely any documentation. That's normal. We work it out from the code: what PHP version it expects, which database it uses, any scheduled tasks, and where it sends form emails. If it needs an older PHP version we run it in isolation, behind Cloudflare. If something has broken, we fix it as part of the move or quote first if it's a bigger job. See [old website hosting](https://dijituldns.co.uk/old-website-hosting/) for detail.

## Never stranded again

After the takeover, the domain is in your name, you have your own Plesk login, and your site sits with dijitul, a UK limited company trading since 2006 with a real office in Mansfield and a phone that gets answered. If you ever want to leave, you can take everything with you. If you'd like a developer on call again, our agency team at dijitul.uk can quote for ongoing changes. If the site is down right now, see [website rescue](https://dijituldns.co.uk/website-rescue/).

## FAQs

### My web developer has disappeared. Who can take over my website?

dijitul can. We take over abandoned websites in the UK without needing the original developer, as long as you control the domain or can prove you own it. We trace where the site and email are hosted, copy everything, fix what's broken and host it for £1 a day + VAT.

### How do I get my website back from my old web designer?

Start with the domain. Find out where it's registered with a WHOIS lookup and whose name it's in. If it's in your name, the registrar should help you regain control. Then copy the site from the hosting. dijitul can do all of this for you and move the site to hosting you control.

### What if my domain is registered in my old developer's name?

It's slower but usually solvable. If you can show the domain was bought for your business, through invoices, contracts or emails, the registrar or registry may update the owner. For .uk domains, Nominet has formal processes for this. dijitul can help you gather evidence and work through the steps.

### Do I own my website if a developer built it?

Usually you own the content you supplied and the domain if it was registered for you, but ownership of the design and code depends on your agreement. In practice most small-business developers expect clients to keep their site. If there's a dispute, take legal advice. dijitul can handle the technical takeover once ownership is clear.

### My old developer also handled my email. Will I lose it?

Not if it's moved carefully. dijitul checks your domain's MX records to see where email is hosted, sets up your new mailboxes in advance (10 POP3/IMAP accounts are included) and switches over in a way that avoids lost messages. Where we can access the old mailboxes, we copy existing mail across; up to 5 accounts move free.

### Can you take over a website if I don't have any passwords?

Yes, provided you control the domain or can prove you own it. Without hosting passwords we work through the hosting company, or copy the public site and rebuild what can't be reached, such as databases. The more access you have, the faster and more complete the takeover is.
