> dijitul hosts Magento 2 stores in the UK. Small and medium shops run on managed Plesk hosting for £1 a day + VAT, with migration, backups and SSL included. Larger catalogues and busy stores get a quoted managed VPS with dedicated resources for OpenSearch, Redis and cron. We also help Magento 1 shops plan their exit.

## Key facts

- Magento Open Source 2.4.8 supports PHP 8.3 and 8.4; PHP 8.2 is only supported for upgrading
- Magento 2.4.8 lists MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.4, Composer 2.2+ and OpenSearch 2.19 or 3
- Magento 2.4 cannot run without a search engine; MySQL search was removed
- Magento's cron must run every minute for indexing, emails and scheduled tasks
- Magento 1 reached end of life on 30 June 2020; the community OpenMage LTS fork continues it
- Small and medium Magento stores fit the £1 a day + VAT plan; large builds are quoted on a VPS

## What Magento 2.4 needs

Magento is the heaviest of the common shop platforms. The requirements for Magento Open Source 2.4.8 are a good guide to what any current Magento store needs:

- **PHP 8.3 or 8.4**, with extensions including bcmath, intl, soap, sodium, xsl, gd, zip and sockets
- **MySQL 8.4** or **MariaDB 11.4**
- **OpenSearch** as the catalogue search engine. MySQL search was removed, so there is no Magento 2.4 without it
- **Composer 2.2+** for installing and updating
- **Redis** or Valkey for cache and sessions, strongly recommended
- A PHP **memory_limit** of 2G for command-line tasks such as compiling and deploying static content

## Which Magento stores suit £1 a day, and which need a VPS

A small or medium Magento store, with a modest catalogue and steady UK traffic, can run on our managed platform under Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT. We set up the search engine, cron and caching it needs.

A store needs a quoted managed VPS when it has:

- Tens of thousands of products or many store views and currencies
- Heavy traffic peaks from sales, TV or email campaigns
- Varnish full-page caching, RabbitMQ message queues or a separate OpenSearch cluster
- An ERP, PIM or marketplace integration that runs large imports through the day

We'll tell you honestly which side of the line you are on. If you're unsure, high-traffic hosting explains how we size servers.

## Magento 1 and stuck upgrades

Magento 1 reached end of life on 30 June 2020. Shops still on it are running code with no official security patches, usually on PHP 5.6 or 7.x. The community **OpenMage LTS** project carries Magento 1 forward with PHP 8 support, and is the most practical stop-gap for many merchants.

Magento 2 stores stuck on 2.3 or early 2.4 have a similar problem: they need old PHP and Elasticsearch versions that are themselves out of support. Upgrades between Magento minor versions are Composer jobs, but extensions often need updating too. We host a staging copy so the upgrade can be tested without touching the live shop. See legacy PHP hosting for how we deal with old versions safely.

## Cron, indexers and performance

Half the Magento support calls we see trace back to cron. Magento expects **bin/magento cron:run** every minute. Without it, prices don't update, emails don't send and indexes go stale.

- Set indexers to **Update by Schedule** so saving a product does not lock the shop
- Run in **production mode**, never developer mode, on the live site
- Use Redis for cache and sessions rather than the file system
- Merge and minify only where it helps; with HTTP/2 bundling can make things slower

## PCI and payments on Magento

Magento has been a target for card-skimming scripts injected into checkout pages. Keep Magento and extensions patched, use payment methods with hosted fields or a hosted page (Braintree, Stripe, PayPal and others), and restrict who can edit checkout templates and admin scripts. On our servers we run malware scanning and file change monitoring, and keep daily backups so a clean copy is always available.

## FAQs

### Can you host Magento 2 on shared hosting?

Most budget shared hosting can't run Magento 2 properly, because it needs OpenSearch, Composer, a per-minute cron and plenty of memory. dijitul runs small and medium Magento 2 stores on managed Plesk hosting for £1 a day + VAT with these set up, and quotes a managed VPS for larger stores.

### What PHP version does Magento 2.4.8 need?

Magento Open Source 2.4.8 supports PHP 8.3 and 8.4. PHP 8.2 is only supported for the purpose of upgrading from earlier versions. It also needs MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.4, Composer 2.2 or newer and OpenSearch 2.19 or 3.

### Is Magento 1 still safe to use?

Adobe ended Magento 1 support on 30 June 2020, so it gets no official security patches. The community OpenMage LTS fork keeps it patched and adds PHP 8 support. If you're still on original Magento 1, moving to OpenMage or rebuilding on Magento 2 or another platform should be a priority.

### How much does Magento hosting cost in the UK?

With dijitul, a small or medium Magento 2 store can be hosted on Complete Hosting for £1 a day + VAT, including migration, daily backups and SSL. Larger stores that need dedicated resources, Varnish or a separate search server are quoted on a managed VPS.

### Why does my Magento store need cron?

Magento uses cron for reindexing, sending order emails, applying catalogue price rules, sitemap generation and clearing old quotes. It expects bin/magento cron:run every minute. If cron stops, the store keeps working but data quietly goes out of date and emails stop sending.

### Does Magento need Elasticsearch or OpenSearch?

Yes. Magento 2.4 removed MySQL catalogue search, so a search engine is mandatory. Magento 2.4.8 uses OpenSearch, and the Elasticsearch 7 and 8 modules were deprecated in that release. Your host needs to provide one, either on the same server or as a separate service.
