> dijitul hosts Symfony applications in the UK on managed Plesk with PHP 8.2 or newer, the document root on public/, Composer and Git deployment, Doctrine migrations and Messenger consumers run from cron. We migrate the app and back it up daily behind Cloudflare. It's £1 a day + VAT; heavier workloads get a quoted VPS.

## Key facts

- Symfony 7 needs PHP 8.2 or newer; newer Symfony branches need newer PHP
- Document root on public/, with .env and var/ outside the web root
- APP_ENV=prod, with composer dump-env prod for faster config loading
- Doctrine migrations run on deploy
- Messenger consumed by cron with time and memory limits on the standard plan
- Supervisor-managed workers and Redis on a quoted managed VPS
- £1 a day + VAT with daily backups

## Symfony set up for production

Symfony apps are usually built by developers who know exactly what they want from a server. We give them that, and give the business owner a UK company that looks after it:

- **PHP version** per site. Symfony 7 needs PHP 8.2 or newer, and each newer Symfony branch raises the minimum again.
- **Extensions** Symfony and Doctrine expect, including ctype, iconv, intl, mbstring, PDO and xml, plus OPcache.
- **Document root** on public/, so config, src/ and var/ are never served.
- **var/cache and var/log** writable by the site's own user.
- **Production environment:** APP_ENV=prod and APP_DEBUG=0, with the profiler and debug toolbar off.

## Deploying with Composer and Git

Plesk's Git integration can pull your repository and run deploy actions. A typical Symfony deploy:

- composer install --no-dev --optimize-autoloader
- composer dump-env prod, which compiles .env files into a PHP file for speed
- php bin/console doctrine:migrations:migrate --no-interaction
- php bin/console cache:clear and cache:warmup
- php bin/console asset-map:compile, if you use AssetMapper

Secrets can be stored with Symfony's secrets vault or as environment variables set on the server, never in Git.

## Messenger, scheduled tasks and workers

Symfony Messenger normally expects a consumer that runs constantly. On the standard plan we run it from cron instead: php bin/console messenger:consume async --time-limit=55 --memory-limit=128M every minute, using the Doctrine transport. That handles typical email sending, notifications and background tasks with a delay of a minute at most.

Console commands for reports, imports and clean-up run as Plesk scheduled tasks. Apps that need consumers running all the time, Redis or AMQP transports, or several workers in parallel are better on a [managed VPS](https://dijituldns.co.uk/managed-vps/) with Supervisor, which we quote.

## Older Symfony applications

Symfony 2, 3 and 4 apps are still common, often as internal systems or customer portals. They need PHP 7.x, sometimes PHP 5.6 for the oldest Symfony 2 builds, and their dependencies may no longer install cleanly with current Composer. We can host them on the PHP version they need, isolated and behind Cloudflare, with the vendor folder preserved exactly as it was. Upgrading through Symfony's LTS releases is the safest path to current PHP, and we quote for it. See [legacy PHP hosting](https://dijituldns.co.uk/legacy-php-hosting/).

## Plan or VPS?

Most Symfony websites, admin panels and APIs fit dijitul Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT. If your app is a SaaS product, handles heavy API traffic or depends on Redis, Elasticsearch or always-on workers, see [SaaS hosting](https://dijituldns.co.uk/saas-hosting/) or [API hosting](https://dijituldns.co.uk/api-hosting/). Not sure? Email info@dijitul.uk with your composer.json and we'll tell you.

## FAQs

### Where can I host a Symfony app in the UK?

dijitul hosts Symfony apps on managed UK Plesk hosting with PHP 8.2 or newer, Composer, Git deploys, Doctrine migrations and Messenger run from cron, for £1 a day + VAT. Apps that need Supervisor-managed workers, Redis or Elasticsearch are hosted on a quoted managed VPS.

### Can Symfony run on shared hosting?

Yes, if you can set the document root to public/, use Composer, choose a recent PHP version and run cron. Messenger can be consumed from cron with time limits instead of a permanent worker. dijitul's Plesk hosting supports all of this.

### What PHP version does Symfony 7 need?

Symfony 7 needs PHP 8.2 or newer. Newer Symfony branches raise the minimum further, and older Symfony 4 and 5 apps run on PHP 7.x or early 8.x. On dijitul hosting you set the PHP version per site in Plesk.

### How do I run Symfony Messenger without Supervisor?

Schedule messenger:consume to run every minute from cron with --time-limit and --memory-limit options, so each run exits cleanly before the next starts. Use the Doctrine transport if you have no Redis or AMQP. For instant processing at scale, use Supervisor on a VPS.

### Can you host an old Symfony 2 or 3 application?

Yes. dijitul can run older Symfony apps on the PHP version they were built for, isolated from other sites, behind Cloudflare and with daily backups. We preserve the existing vendor folder so the app runs as before, and can quote for upgrading through Symfony LTS releases.
