What happens when a domain name expires?

When a domain name expires, your website and email usually stop working within days. There is normally a grace period to renew, then a costlier recovery stage, then the name is released for anyone to register. dijitul Complete Hosting includes one domain registration or renewal a year on common extensions, managed for you, at £1 a day + VAT.

Key facts

  • An expired domain usually stops resolving, so the website and email both fail.
  • For .uk domains, Nominet suspends an unrenewed domain around 30 days after expiry and cancels it around 90 days after expiry.
  • For .com and similar domains, registrars usually offer a renewal grace period, followed by a redemption period with a higher fee.
  • Once a domain is deleted and released, anyone can register it.
  • Expiry reminders often go to an old email address that nobody checks.
  • The registrant named on the domain is its legal holder, not necessarily whoever pays the bill.

What happens, step by step

A domain name is registered for a fixed term, usually one or more years. If nobody renews it by the expiry date, it goes through stages before it is released. The exact timings depend on the extension and the registrar, but the pattern is similar:

  1. Expiry date passes. The registrar may keep things working for a short time, or may stop the domain straight away.
  2. Website and email stop. The registrar points the domain away from your server or suspends it. Visitors see an error or a parking page, and email bounces.
  3. Grace period. You can usually still renew at the normal price, or with a small late fee.
  4. Recovery stage. On many extensions the domain enters a redemption period where recovery costs more.
  5. Release. The domain is deleted and anyone can register it, including domain investors.

Check your own registrar's terms, because they can stop the domain earlier than the registry deadlines.

How to recover an expired domain

  1. Act today. Every day makes it more expensive or more likely to be lost.
  2. Find the registrar. Use a WHOIS search such as ICANN Lookup, or the Nominet WHOIS for .uk names.
  3. Log in and renew. If you cannot log in, contact the registrar's support with proof of identity and proof you are the registrant.
  4. If a developer or old agency registered it, ask them to renew or transfer it. If they have vanished, see my web developer has disappeared.
  5. Check DNS once renewed. Make sure the website and MX records point to the right place again.

How to stop it happening again

  • Turn on auto-renew, with a card that will not expire first.
  • Make sure the registrant contact is your business and the email address is one you check.
  • Renew for more than one year if your registrar allows it.
  • Keep a simple list of every domain, its registrar and its expiry date.
  • Use a provider that manages renewals for you as part of hosting.

Read how to check who owns your domain name to confirm it is in your name.

Watch out for renewal scams

Domain owners are often sent letters or emails that look like renewal notices but come from unrelated companies. They may warn that your domain is about to expire and ask you to pay, which can quietly transfer the domain to them or sign you up for a service you do not need.

  • Only renew through the registrar you already use.
  • Check the sender against your WHOIS record before paying anything.
  • Ignore notices offering to register a similar name in another extension unless you actually want it.
  • If you are unsure, ask your host or registrar before acting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my domain back after it expires?

Usually, if you act quickly. During the grace period you can normally renew at the standard price through your registrar. Later, some extensions enter a redemption period where recovery costs more. Once the domain is deleted and released, anyone can register it, and getting it back may mean buying it from the new owner.

How long after a .co.uk domain expires is it deleted?

Under Nominet's process, an unrenewed .uk or .co.uk domain is suspended around 30 days after its expiry date, so the website and email stop, and cancelled around 90 days after expiry, when it becomes available to register again. Your registrar may stop the domain working sooner, so renew as soon as you notice.

Does my email stop working if my domain expires?

Yes, usually. Email relies on MX records in your domain's DNS. When the domain is suspended or redirected after expiry, those records stop working, so incoming email bounces and recipients may stop trusting mail you send. Your mailboxes and old messages normally still exist with your email provider, but new mail will not arrive.

Why did I not get a renewal reminder for my domain?

Reminders go to the registrant or account email held by the registrar. If that is an old address, a former employee, or a web developer who registered the domain for you, the reminders never reach you. Check the contact details on your domain account and update them to an address you check regularly.
