Key facts
- Renew at clients.dijitul.uk, with live prices
- Auto-renew avoids relying on someone reading a reminder
- A .uk name is suspended 30 days after expiry
- gTLD restore fees in redemption are set by the registrar
- A gTLD transfer adds a year; a .uk tag change does not
- One renewal a year included with dijihost Complete Hosting (£1 a day + VAT)
Why domains lapse
Domains are rarely lost on purpose. The usual causes are dull:
- The reminder goes to an old email address or a former employee.
- The card on file has expired.
- The renewal is filed as spam or as a "fake invoice".
- Nobody knows which registrar holds the name.
Each one is fixable in a few minutes, before the expiry date rather than after.
The cost of a lapse is rarely the renewal fee. It's the days without email, the orders that didn't arrive and, for a gTLD in redemption, a restore fee far above the normal renewal.
Set it up so it renews itself
In the dijitul client portal, check three things for every domain you own:
- Auto-renew is on. The renewal happens without anyone having to act.
- The payment method is current. Auto-renew can't work with an expired card.
- The contact email is one you read. Use a role address like accounts@ rather than one person's inbox.
The portal also shows each domain's expiry date and today's renewal price.
Do this check once a year, ideally on a fixed date, and whenever a staff member who handled domains leaves. It takes a few minutes per domain and removes the single most common reason businesses lose their name.
Be wary of renewal letters from strangers
Owners often receive letters or emails offering to "renew" their domain, sometimes from companies they've never used. Some are transfer offers dressed up as invoices. Only renew with the registrar or portal that actually manages the name. If you're unsure who that is, a WHOIS or RDAP lookup shows the registrar; our domain ownership guide explains how.
A genuine reminder from your own registrar will name the domain and the account it sits in. If a letter doesn't, or asks you to sign up somewhere new, treat it as a sales approach.
Renewal, transfers and your expiry date
If you plan to move a domain, timing matters. Transferring a .com, .org or .net normally adds a year to its expiry, so the year you pay for isn't wasted. A .uk IPS tag change does not add a year, so a .co.uk close to expiry should be renewed after the tag change, not before. See domain transfers.
Also check the renewal date before you start any move. A domain within a few days of expiry is safer renewed where it is, so a slow transfer can't leave it lapsing in between.
Line up renewal dates
Businesses with several names often find them expiring in different months with different suppliers. Bringing them into one account makes it easier to see what's due and avoid surprises. Where you hold many names, managing multiple domains covers which to keep and which to let go.
A simple list helps: the domain, what it's for, its expiry date and whether it should be renewed. Names that no longer serve a purpose can be allowed to lapse on purpose rather than by accident, but check first that no email still arrives on them.
How dijitul helps
Renew at clients.dijitul.uk. If your site is on dijihost Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT, one domain renewal or registration a year is included on common extensions, so the main domain stops being a separate bill. Already past the expiry date? Go straight to expired domain recovery.
How it works and what it costs
Domains are priced live in the client portal. DNS management and 10 mailboxes are included with dijihost Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT. On their own, DNS and email set-up is £45 an hour + VAT or a fixed quote.
Tell us what you have
Your domains, who they are registered with, where your DNS and email live today, and what you want to change.
Plan the change
We list every DNS record and mailbox first, so nothing is forgotten, and agree a time to switch.
Make the switch
Transfers, nameserver changes, DNS records and mailbox moves, done carefully with low TTLs and a rollback plan.
Check it works
We test the website, email delivery, SPF, DKIM and DMARC from the outside before calling it done.
Look after it
Renewals, records and email stay looked after, and you can call a person when something changes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I renew my domain with dijitul?
Log in to the dijitul client portal at clients.dijitul.uk, find the domain and renew it, or turn on auto-renew so it happens automatically. The portal shows the current renewal price and the expiry date for each name you hold.
Is domain renewal included with hosting?
With dijihost Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT, one domain registration or renewal a year is included on common extensions: .uk, .co.uk, .com, .org, .org.uk and .net. Premium names and some extensions are excluded. Other renewals are paid in the portal.
I got a renewal letter from a company I don't know. Should I pay?
No, not until you have checked. Some of these letters are transfer offers presented as invoices. Renew only with the registrar or portal that manages the domain. A WHOIS or RDAP lookup shows which registrar that is.
What happens if I renew late?
For a .uk name, the domain is suspended 30 days after expiry and can be renewed until day 90. For .com, .org and .net, a grace period follows expiry, then a 30-day redemption period where the registrar charges a restore fee.
Should I renew before transferring a domain?
For a .com, .org or .net, usually not: the transfer normally adds a year. For a .uk name, the IPS tag change adds no time, so transfer first and renew with the new registrar, leaving enough margin before expiry.
