When a dedicated server makes sense
A dedicated server is a whole physical machine that only you use. No neighbours, no contention for CPU or disk. It's the right choice when:
- You run a busy shop or forum that needs consistent performance at peak times.
- You host many sites as an agency and want them on hardware you control. See white-label hosting.
- You run a custom application, SaaS product or API with steady load.
- You need a GPU for AI inference. See GPU servers.
- A contract or customer requires single-tenant hardware.
If your needs are smaller or likely to change, a managed VPS is usually better value.
What we spec and why
| Component | What drives the choice |
|---|---|
| CPU | Number of PHP or Node workers, background jobs and peak concurrent users. More cores for parallel requests; higher clock speed for single-threaded PHP. |
| RAM | Database buffer pool, PHP-FPM workers, Redis and any in-memory search. Running out of RAM is the most common cause of slow servers. |
| Storage | NVMe or SSD for databases. Capacity for media, logs and local backups. RAID for redundancy. |
| Network | Bandwidth for media-heavy sites, downloads or API traffic. |
| GPU | Only if you're running AI models yourself. VRAM decides which model sizes fit. |
What's managed
- Operating system install, hardening and updates.
- Web server, PHP versions, MariaDB or MySQL, Redis and other services you need.
- Firewall, brute-force protection and malware scanning.
- Monitoring of CPU, memory, disk and services, with alerts to our team.
- Backups, with restores on request.
- Plesk if you want a control panel, or a plain Linux stack for custom applications.
See server management for the detail.
Questions we'll ask
- What will run on the server: websites, an application, databases, AI models?
- What are your traffic levels and busiest times?
- How large are your databases and file storage, and how fast are they growing?
- Which software versions do you need, including any old PHP?
- Do you need root access for your own team?
- What happens to your business if the server is down for an hour, and does that justify a standby?

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a dedicated server or a VPS?
Choose a VPS if your needs are moderate or changing; it's cheaper and easy to resize. Choose a dedicated server for heavy, steady workloads, many sites, a GPU, or a requirement for single-tenant hardware. dijitul quotes both as managed services.
What is a managed dedicated server?
It's a physical server used only by you, where the provider handles setup, operating system updates, security, monitoring and backups. You focus on your sites or application. dijitul offers managed dedicated servers for UK businesses on a quoted basis.
How much RAM does my server need?
Enough to hold your database's working set, all PHP or Node workers at peak, and caches such as Redis, with headroom. Many slow servers are short of RAM rather than CPU. dijitul sizes RAM from your real usage before quoting.
Can I have root access on a managed dedicated server?
Often yes, by agreement. Root access means changes you make can affect what we manage, so we agree who is responsible for what. Many customers prefer Plesk access plus our team making system-level changes.
Can dijitul move my sites from an old dedicated server?
Yes. We audit the old server, recreate the PHP versions, databases, cron jobs and services you need on the new one, migrate in planned stages and switch DNS through Cloudflare. Migration is included in the quote.
Is a dedicated server more secure than shared hosting?
It removes the risk of other customers' sites on the same machine, which helps. Security still depends on patching, firewalls and keeping your own software updated. A managed dedicated server from dijitul covers the server side.
