Why backups matter more than people think

Most website disasters aren't dramatic. A plugin update breaks the layout. Someone deletes the wrong page. An old contact form gets abused. A database table corrupts. Without a recent backup, each of those can mean days of rebuilding. With one, it's a short restore.

Backups are also your safety net against hacking. If a site is compromised, restoring a clean copy from before the attack and then fixing the hole is often the fastest route back. See website security.

What's backed up

  • Website files: code, themes, plugins, modules, uploads and configuration.
  • Databases: MySQL or MariaDB databases with your content, orders, customers and settings.
  • Hosting configuration such as PHP settings and scheduled tasks.

Backups run daily and are kept for 14 days. That means you can roll back to any day in the last two weeks, which covers the usual case of a problem nobody notices for a few days. If you need copies older than 14 days, for example a month-end archive, download a backup from Plesk and keep it on your own storage.

How restores work

  1. Call 01623 650333 or email info@dijitul.uk and tell us what went wrong and roughly when.
  2. We pick the right backup: usually the last one before the problem.
  3. We restore what's needed. That might be the whole site, one folder, one file or just the database.
  4. We check the site works and let you know.

For online shops we're careful about database restores, because rolling back can lose recent orders. We'll talk it through before overwriting anything live.

Your own copies

Good practice is to keep more than one copy in more than one place. You have your own Plesk login, so you can create and download a backup whenever you like, for example before a big content change. Keep an occasional copy on your own storage too. It costs nothing and means you're never dependent on any single supplier, including us.

Frequently asked questions

Does my web host back up my website?

Not always, and not always in a way you can rely on. Some hosts charge extra or only back up weekly. dijitul takes daily backups of files and databases on its £1 a day + VAT hosting and restores them for you on request.

How do I restore my website from a backup?

On dijitul hosting, contact the UK team by phone or email, say what broke and when, and we restore the right backup, whether that's the whole site, a folder or just the database. You can also restore or download backups yourself in Plesk.

How often should a small business back up its website?

Daily for any site that changes, and always before updates or big edits. Online shops and booking sites change constantly, so daily is the minimum. Keep an occasional copy somewhere other than your host as well.

Can a backup restore lose my recent orders?

Yes, restoring a whole database rolls it back to the backup time, so orders placed since then would be lost. dijitul checks this with you first and can restore files only, or specific tables, to avoid losing orders.

Are backups included with dijitul hosting?

Yes. Daily backups are included in dijitul Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT and kept for 14 days, along with restores by the UK team. There's no separate backup add-on.

How long does dijitul keep website backups?

dijitul keeps daily backups for 14 days, so you can restore your website files and databases to any day in the last two weeks. For longer-term archives, download a backup from your Plesk login and store it somewhere else as well.

Should I use a backup plugin as well as host backups?

A plugin that copies backups to separate cloud storage is a sensible extra layer, especially for busy sites. Make sure it doesn't slow the site or fill the disk. dijitul can advise on a setup that suits your site.
