What a VPS is
A virtual private server is a virtual machine on a larger physical server. You get a fixed allocation of CPU cores, memory and storage that other customers can't use. It behaves like your own server: you can install the software you need and change system settings, which you can't do on shared hosting.
Common reasons to move to a VPS
- Your site has outgrown shared resources and slows at busy times.
- You need software that shared hosting doesn't allow: a long-running Node.js process, Python workers, Docker containers, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, a vector database.
- You're running automation such as n8n, which needs to stay running and store credentials securely.
- You need queue workers for Laravel Horizon, Symfony Messenger or similar, managed by a process supervisor.
- You want a staging and production setup for a development team.
- You're an agency hosting many client sites. See white-label hosting.
Managed or self-managed
| Self-managed VPS | Managed VPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system updates | You | dijitul |
| Security and firewall | You | dijitul |
| Backups | You arrange | dijitul |
| Software installs | You | Agreed with dijitul |
| Best for | Experienced sysadmins | Businesses and dev teams |
Most of our customers choose managed VPS. If you have your own sysadmin, a self-managed VPS with our DNS and backups may suit you.
What we'll ask before quoting
- What will run on it: websites, an app, background workers, databases?
- What language and versions: PHP, Node.js, Python?
- How much memory does your app use today, and at peak?
- Do you need a control panel, or SSH and Git only?
- Who will deploy code, and how?
- Do you need more than one environment, such as staging?

Frequently asked questions
What is VPS hosting?
VPS hosting gives you a virtual private server: a fixed share of CPU, memory and storage on a physical machine, isolated from other users, with the ability to install your own software. dijitul quotes managed and self-managed VPS hosting for UK customers.
When should I upgrade from shared hosting to a VPS?
When your site slows at busy times, you hit resource limits, or you need software shared hosting won't run, such as long-running Node.js, Python workers, Docker or n8n. dijitul can review your site and recommend whether a VPS is worth it.
Can I run n8n on a VPS?
Yes. n8n runs well on a small Linux VPS, usually in Docker with a database, behind a reverse proxy with SSL. Credentials stay on your server. dijitul can set up and manage an n8n VPS on a quoted basis.
Is a VPS hard to manage?
A self-managed VPS needs Linux skills: updates, firewalls, backups and troubleshooting. A managed VPS from dijitul hands those jobs to our team, so you can use the server without being a sysadmin.
Can I upgrade my VPS later?
Usually yes. A VPS can normally be resized to add CPU, RAM or storage with a short restart. dijitul plans the spec so you have headroom and can grow without a full migration.
Do I get root access on a VPS?
On a self-managed VPS, yes. On a managed VPS, root access is available by agreement, with clear responsibilities. Many customers prefer SSH as a normal user with sudo for specific tasks.
