Key facts
- A dedicated server is a whole physical machine used by one customer.
- A VPS is a virtual server with reserved resources on a shared physical machine.
- Shared or managed hosting runs many websites on one server, with the provider managing it.
- Most brochure sites, blogs and small shops run well on good managed hosting.
- Dedicated servers need someone to manage updates, security, backups and monitoring.
- dijitul quotes dedicated servers and VPS; standard sites fit Complete Hosting at £1 a day + VAT.
What a dedicated server is
A dedicated server is a whole physical machine rented by one customer. All of its processor, memory and disk belong to you. It sits at one end of a scale:
| Type | What you get | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Managed hosting | Space on a server the provider runs and maintains | Most small business sites and shops |
| VPS | A virtual server with reserved resources | Growing sites, custom apps, developers |
| Dedicated server | A whole physical machine | Heavy traffic, big databases, strict isolation |
For a fuller comparison, see shared vs managed vs VPS vs dedicated.
Signs you might need one
- Sustained high traffic that makes pages slow even after caching and image fixes.
- A large or busy database, such as a big Magento catalogue or a forum with heavy posting.
- Many sites that you want to group on one machine, such as an agency portfolio.
- Custom software that needs specific system packages, services or background workers.
- AI, GPU or data processing workloads that need a lot of processor power or memory.
- Isolation requirements from a client contract or security policy that rule out shared servers.
If none of these apply, a dedicated server will usually cost more without making a visible difference.
Signs you probably do not
Many people move to a dedicated server because their site feels slow, when the real cause is something else. Before upgrading, check:
- Are images compressed and sized correctly?
- Is page caching on, and is OPcache enabled?
- Is the site on a current PHP 8.x version?
- Are there plugins or scripts doing far more work than needed?
- Is the current host simply overcrowded?
Our guide on why a website is slow covers these. Fixing them, or moving to better managed hosting, solves most problems without a dedicated server.
The hidden work of running a server
A dedicated server is not just a bigger plan. Someone has to:
- Install and patch the operating system, web server, PHP and database.
- Configure firewalls, brute-force protection and SSL.
- Set up and test backups, ideally off the machine.
- Monitor disk, memory and services, and respond when something fails.
- Plan for hardware faults, since one machine is one point of failure.
If you do not have a technical person, budget for server management alongside the server itself.
Costs to compare
When comparing options, look at the full yearly cost, not just the server rental:
- Server rental for the hardware or virtual machine.
- Management, if you need someone to patch, secure and monitor it.
- Control panel licence, such as Plesk, if you want one.
- Backups and off-site storage.
- Your own time or a developer's time when something goes wrong.
- Migration to the new server, and again if you later move.
A cheap unmanaged server can end up costing more than managed hosting once these are added. A good middle step is a VPS, which can usually be resized as your site grows, so you only move to dedicated hardware when the numbers show you need it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a VPS and a dedicated server?
A VPS is a virtual server: you get reserved processor, memory and disk on a physical machine shared with other virtual servers. A dedicated server gives you the whole physical machine. A VPS is cheaper and easier to resize. A dedicated server offers the most power and isolation, and suits heavy, steady workloads.
Does a dedicated server make a website faster?
Only if the server was the bottleneck. If a site is slow because of large images, heavy plugins, no caching or an old PHP version, a dedicated server will not fix that. Measure first. If time to first byte is high and the current server is overloaded, more dedicated resources can make a real difference.
Who manages a dedicated server?
With an unmanaged dedicated server, you do: operating system updates, security, backups, monitoring and fault response. With a managed dedicated server, the provider handles that for you. Small businesses without in-house technical staff should choose managed, because an unpatched or unmonitored server is a real security and downtime risk.
Is a dedicated server worth it for a small business?
Usually not. Most small business websites, including many online shops, run well on good managed hosting at a fraction of the cost. A dedicated server is worth it for sustained heavy traffic, large databases, custom software, strict isolation requirements, or AI and data workloads that need significant processing power.
