Key facts
- Many older websites still work well and still bring in enquiries.
- The main risk with an old site is unpatched software, not its age or design.
- Older PHP versions no longer receive official security fixes, so they need extra care.
- A rebuild that changes URLs without 301 redirects can lose search rankings built up over years.
- Keeping an old site running safely buys time to plan a rebuild properly.
- dijitul welcomes older websites and runs older PHP versions where safely possible.
There is no rule that old means bad
A website built ten or fifteen years ago can still rank well, load quickly and win business. Many small firms have sites like this. The question is not "is it old?" but "is it safe, does it work for customers, and does it do what the business needs?"
Answer those three and the decision usually makes itself.
Age alone is not a reason to spend thousands on a new site.
Keep it running if
- It still brings in enquiries or sales.
- It ranks well for the searches that matter to you.
- It works on phones well enough, or only needs small fixes.
- Its software can be updated, or it can be isolated and protected on a well-managed server.
- You only make occasional small changes.
- A rebuild would cost more than the site earns you in the next year or two.
Rebuild it if
- It has been hacked more than once, or its CMS and plugins can no longer be updated.
- It needs a PHP version so old it cannot be run safely.
- It is unusable on a phone.
- Nobody can edit it, because the developer has gone and the code is undocumented.
- You need features it cannot reasonably offer, such as online booking or a modern shop.
- Your business has changed and the site no longer describes what you do.
A sensible middle path
You do not have to decide today. A common approach is:
- Move it to a managed host that supports older PHP versions where safely possible, so it keeps running. See our guide My web host is removing old PHP versions.
- Back it up daily and put it behind Cloudflare.
- Fix the urgent things: SSL, contact forms, broken pages, admin passwords.
- Record what works. Note which pages get traffic and enquiries, and the URLs that rank.
- Plan the rebuild with 301 redirects from every old URL, so you keep your search rankings.
| Option | Upfront cost | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Keep as is, unmanaged | None | High: hacks and breakage |
| Keep on managed hosting | Low | Lower, while you plan |
| Rebuild | Higher | Low if redirects are done well |
Questions to answer before deciding
- How many enquiries or sales came through the website in the last year?
- Which pages get the most visits, and from where?
- When was the software last updated, and can it be updated now?
- Which PHP version does it need?
- Who can edit it today, and how long does a simple change take?
- What would a rebuild cost, and what would it add that the current site cannot?
Write the answers down. If most point to a working site with a fixable risk, keep it on good hosting. If most point to a dead end, start planning the rebuild.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to keep running an old website?
It can be, with care. The risk comes from out-of-date software with known security holes, not from age itself. Running the site on a well-managed server, with daily backups, strong passwords, Cloudflare in front and the newest PHP version it can safely use, reduces the risk a lot while you plan any rebuild.
How do I know if my website needs rebuilding?
Rebuild if the site has been hacked repeatedly, its software can no longer be updated, it is unusable on phones, nobody can edit it, or it no longer reflects your business. If it still brings in work, ranks well and only needs small fixes, keeping it on good hosting is often the better value.
Will I lose my Google rankings if I rebuild my website?
Not if it is done carefully. Keep the URLs that rank where possible, and add 301 redirects from every old URL to the matching new page. Keep the useful content, titles and headings. Rankings drop most often when old pages are deleted without redirects or useful content is removed.
My host says my website is too old. What can I do?
Move it to a host that supports older websites. Many hosts remove old PHP versions to simplify their servers, which can break older sites. A managed host can often run an older PHP version safely for a period while the site is updated or replaced. See our guide on hosts removing old PHP versions.
How much does it cost to keep an old website running?
Mostly the hosting and occasional fixes. With dijitul, Complete Hosting costs £1 a day + VAT (£365 a year + VAT), including migration, older PHP versions where safely possible, daily backups, free SSL, managed security and UK support. That is often far less than a rebuild, and buys time to plan one properly.
